A buffet of community resources

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

In an effort to help other families out there that are in need of resources that they can’t seem to find them, I’ve added a new resources section in the My Autism Help Forums.

This will be a database of community resources, listed by State and then further broken down from there. What you need to do is simply find the thread for your state and inside, post about a resource that you are aware of. If it’s located in a county that already listed, simply post it there. If your county isn’t listed, just create a new thread and add your resource.

I’m adding states as I get the requests for them. It takes a bit of work for each one and It’s easier if I simply add them based on your request. I will also add information for other countries as I get the request to have them added.

Please read the sticky thread located here, for more information.

I think this could become a great community resource for everyone but I need your help to grow it.

Please visit the My Autism Help Forum’s Resource Page and share your knowledge and experience.

Fruit Snacks taste better when they’re lined up

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I thought this was cute.  We had some left over fruit snacks from our trip to the Zoo yesterday. After lunch I told the boys that they could each have one package.

Emmett opened his up and before eating them, lined them up in a straight line.

How many of you see this at home, with your child on the Autism spectrum?

What’s your “go to” food for your picky eater?

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I’ve been talking about feeding issues when it comes to my boys with Autism….  My question for you all is pretty simple.

Do you have a go to food for your picky eaters?  You know, something that you can pull out when all else fails.

Ours is Little Caesars Pizza.  What’s yours?

Things always get worse before they get better

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

People say that things always get worse before they get better. I really hope they’re right.  I mean, I don’t know who said that, so I don’t know if they know what they’re talking about.

Having said that, for the sake of being hopeful, I’m going to assume they are right.

That being the case, things should definitely be getting better soon.  They’ve got to get better. They just have to.

I’ve been working on something for two years and it’s about to pay off.  However, until then, things are pretty friggin bad.  I still can’t get anyone from the gas company to explain why we were shut off.  All I’m being told is that it shouldn’t have happened. A supervisor is supposed to be calling me but they haven’t and hold times are ridiculous.

This morning it appears that we’ve lost our Internet connection as well.

Honestly, it’s embarrassing to admit this.

The simple truth is that we are just completely buried with all that life has blessed us with.

As many of you can relate to, this has nothing to do with laziness or irresponsibility.  What it does mean is that one or two of the dozens of balls we’re constantly juggling have dropped.

For a long time we’ve managed to keep ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, I’ve stumbled along the way and lost precious ground.

I know  that many of you can relate to this, so I don’t really need to explain.  However, some of you may not be able to relate and so I’d like to give you an example to help put this into perspective.

As a special needs family, we have to make a lot of tough decisions.

Quite often we find ourselves with very limited resources and lots of things that need attention.

Right now we basically have to choose between keeping the Internet or Gas on and getting both Lizze and Gavin to the Cleveland Clinic next week.

I know there are options like taxi or bus but realistically they’re not practical, especially for someone with special needs or constant pain.  We’re in the middle of the Summer so heat isn’t an issue and for right now we can bathe the kids at the grandparents.

It may seem irresponsible to some that have never had to make a decision like this but when your in that position, you can only did what you feel is right.  Many times, I find myself picking the best of the bad options.

As I said, I’m really hoping that the old saying that things always get worse before they get better, holds true.

Child Protective Services: Update 6/22/2013

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

It’s been a little while since I’ve last updated you as to the status of our current status.

First let me thank you all for the out pouring if support.  It’s quite humbling to know that so many if you care.  Thank you.

As for our current status…..

We’ve not had any contact with Child Protective Services is well over a week.  The last phone call I received had us in a pretty good spot.

At this point, I don’t think they believe the allegations that we don’t take our kids to the doctors.

However, they are still waiting to here back from the Cleveland Clinic and Akron Children’s Hospital. I’m told that if those come back without any concern, the case will be closed.

When the hell knows how long this is going to take.  I know that I don’t.

Even though we’ve done nothing wrong, it’s a helplessness feeling to be under investigation for being a bad parent, especially when you aren’t.

That’s where we are right now. As soon as I know more I’ll pass it along.

#Autism and The Giraffe

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

One of the most amazing moments in the lives of my boys, unto this point, occurred yesterday.  While we were at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for Dream Night, the boys got to meet a Giraffe, up close and personal.

All three of the boys were beside themselves.

Gavin couldn’t stop laughing and Elliott and Emmett took turns saying, “this is wicked awesome”.

It was an experience that they will never forget.  They actually fed the Giraffe, several times and Emmett was licked as well.

Truly priceless……..

Emmett met Wolverine today

DiggPinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

As we were leaving the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo this evening, we ran into someone really special.

Emmett was hitching a ride in the stroller and who should we stumble across? Wolverine….. Emmett was sooooo excited and he was giving Wolverine high fives.

Elliott and Gavin on the other hand were kinda freaked out and wanted nothing to do with him.

I love this picture and I’m so stoked that the boys had a good time.
