Should #Autism be cured?

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I answered my very first question as an expert, on Dr. Oz’s Sharecare website. For the record, I’m so incredibly honored to be recognized in this fashion for my work in the Autism Community and I hope that this new opportunity allows me to reach out to even more people.

The question that was asked was Should Autism be cured?

First off all, this is a loaded question. Answering it is akin to playing Russian Roulette. No matter how you answer, there’s a bullet in every chamber that has your name written all over it.

With that in mind, I wanted to share my answer and get your thoughts on the subject of  whether or not we should cure Autism.

Should Autism be cured?

This is a really tough question to answer. As a father to 3 boys in various places on the Autism spectrum, I’ve asked myself this question many times.

Autism is a profoundly dynamic disorder, meaning that each and every person with Autism is unique, with a different set of skill sets as well as challenges. Some people are more profoundly impacted by Autism and face a great many challenges and are perhaps, unable to even speak.

Others on the Autism spectrum will face fewer challenges in life.

When it comes to a cure for Autism, the first thing that comes to mind is no.

In my opinion, I don’t see how you could possibly remove something from someone that is so tightly woven into the very fabric of their being. How could you remove the Autism, without removing a huge part of who they are?

Should Autism be cured?

I think the simple answer to this very complicated question is that I don’t think we have the right to make that decision for anyone. Most of my Autistic friends would in fact be insulted by this question because it infers that there is something wrong with them to begin with. I don’t think I could bring myself to make this type of decision for my kids. The risk of losing who they are would be far too great.

I would think that if a cure were available, it would have to be up to the individual person. It’s their life, therefore their decision to make.

As a special needs parent, it breaks my heart to watch my kids struggle at times. Having said that, they always seem to overcome their obstacles. They’re happy and enjoying life. If I were pressed to make decision, I would not “cure” them of what makes them…..them.

If you interested in reading what my other colleagues had to say on the subject, you can hop over to the Sharecare website and read their responses here.

I would encourage you to join the Sharecare website. It’s basically Facebook for health care. Here’s a bit more about it:

Big Fish Games is Paying It Forward

Big-Fish-Games-Logo-220x146

Big Fish Games reached out to me this week and wanted to Pay It Forward. Big Fish Games is one of the biggest names in gaming, both mobile and online. They also know how important apps and games can be for people on the #Autism Spectrum and so they wanted to provide one of my readers with a $25 Google Play Gift Card.

This means that the winner will have $25 big ones to spend on any android app(s) or game(s) they see fit.

Please remember to support the companies that are Paying It Forward.

Important Note:

Please keep in mind that I’m working really, really hard to bring these giveaways to you, my more than deserving readers. This is one of the ways that I’m trying to help the community and give back. This is one of the ways that I’m Paying It Forward.

I’m getting a ton of entrees into these giveaways but I’m having a difficult time contacting the winners.

Please remember to check the date that the giveaways end and make sure to provide the correct contact information.

I pay out of pocket for most of the shipping costs and I would like each prize to go to the person who won. However, people are responding to emails or the email address is dead.

You have 24 hours from the point I email you, to respond and accept the prize. I hate having to pass someone up because of the 24 hours expires.

To quote Jerry Maguire, “Help me to help you. Help me to help you….”

Please don’t make me break out the movie quotes again….especially that one. :-)

Thanks,

Rob ;-)

Grief

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

As I write this my beloved Auntie Paula is dying of lung cancer. Stupid, freaking, destructive cancer. I hate it. I hate that I’m not with her more. It’s not my place to be with her. My uncle is there. My cousins, her daughters, are there. And her grand-daughters are there. My Grammy Lou Who (I only call her that here on the blog, I don‘t know why.) is there with my partner in crime, my Auntie Sharon. My Auntie Paula doesn‘t need me there. Yet, I feel as if I should be there.

I feel like I’m moving through molasses. Every breath is too thick and it hurts. My brain feels fuzzy and hazy, like I’m drunk and stoned. Only I’m stone cold sober. Moving just feels… awkward. I can’t really explain it but my body doesn‘t feel like it’s entirely mine. Everything hurts – every joint, every muscle, every everything – which isn‘t new or unusual yet it is. This isn‘t my usual pain. This isn‘t my usual achy don‘t touch me, my skin feels like it’s on fire pain. Although my skin does feel like it’s on fire. It just doesn‘t feel…right.

I’m hungry one minute. I feel like I’m starving and I haven’t eaten in days (I have I assure you). Then 10 minutes later the mere idea of food turns my stomach and I can’t stand to look at it.

What the hell is happening to me?

Does any of this make sense?

If you have any thoughts or ideas or well wishes or whatever please leave them as a comment on my post on my blog so that I can enjoy them.

Thank you for your love and support!

The Autism Awareness Challenge: Is @Canton_Ohio and the @CantonRepdotcom #Autism Aware?

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

The Autism Awareness Challenge

It’s really sad that my hometown doesn’t invest in Autism Awareness Month, at least not that I can tell. The Canton Repository, aside from the article about me last year, never seems to take interest in the Autism Community.

As one of the leading Autism bloggers around, I would love to think that the city, I call home, would be Autism Aware.

Sadly, I don’t believe that to be the case.wpid-autism-ribbon.jpeg

The City of Canton and The Canton Repository will go all out for Hall of Fame Week, every single summer, but nothing for Autism Awareness. It’s really sad, that retired athletes seem to be more important than our children’s future.

As I recall, there was at least one company that did something last year and I believe that was Panera Bread.

My question to both the City of Canton and The Canton Repository is why?

I realize that working with the Autism Community doesn’t bring in the tourist dollars that  the Pro Football Hall of Fame does, but why not at least make sure everyone knows that April is Autism Awareness Month?

I know that I feel ignored and I can imagine that other families feel the same way.

What does it take to really get your attention?

How about a being featured on CNN Health? Wait, I was: Little people, lots of pills: Experts debate medicating kids.

How about being published by CNN Health? Wait, that happened as well: A heart shattered by a glimpse into autism.

One of my goals with the above two CNN articles was to bring attention to the Autism Community here in Stark County, Ohio. In a way, I succeeded because I connected with many new Autism families and learned more about what needs to change around these parts.

I’m really hoping to make a difference in not only the lives of my family but the many others families out there as well, that have been touched by Autism….

The Challenge

I’m issuing a challenge to both The City of Canton and The Canton Repository to show the Autism Community that we haven’t been forgotten. Let’s see some Autism Awareness banners around town. Let’s see some Autism families featured in the newspapers.

Here’s the reality of the situation as per Autism Speaks:

Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 88 American children as on the autism spectrum–a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Careful research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

By way of comparison, more children are diagnosed with autism each year than with juvenile diabetes, AIDS or cancer, combined.* ASD affects over 2 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. Moreover, government autism statistics suggest that prevalence rates have increased 10 to 17 percent annually in recent years. There is no established explanation for this continuing increase, although improved diagnosis and environmental influences are two reasons often considered.

Unfortunately, odds are that in your lifetime, you will be touched by Autism somehow, if it hasn’t happened already.

The Autism Community needs support. Our kids, both young and grown, need to be understood and accepted. Our families, especially those that are struggling, need help to survive.

I’m willing to work with anyone that wants to help make a difference. I would like to see this help come by way of our community leaders as leading by example is a great way to help educate the public.

Should anyone decide to take on this challenge, you can Contact Me.

If you would like to help me put pressure on my hometown you can do so here at the following links:

The Canton Repository on Facebook

Mayor William J. Healy II

I would encourage everyone to issue this challenge to their local community leaders and see if we can make this the best Autism Awareness Month yet.
