Managing a behavioral crisis: We’re home

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I’m really tired but I wanted together you all know what happened.  The quick and dirty version is that Gavin is home again.  They had no beds available and our only option would be a treatment facility that was about 90 minutes away.
We opted to forgo that for several reasons.  One being we physically, couldn’t afford the trip but the other being it would be pointless to send him at this point.

I’ll have a big write up in the morning,  I promise but for now I need sleep.  Thank you for your thoughts and prayers :-)

**Thanks for reading**

It’s not selfish, it’s survival

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

As I’m sure you can imagine,  Lizze and I don’t get out much. What I mean by that is we don’t get out by ourselves very often.

It’s tough not to be able to spend some alone time with your spouse or partner because you’re always wrapped up in the kids.

Last year we had decided that even if we can’t get away,  at least we can dedicate some time to each other,  at least every once in awhile. More often than not,  these plans fall through for one reason or another.

However,  tonight Lizze and I hung out and had some ice cream and watched our new obsession on Netflix.

Last year,  Lizze and I watched the entire series of Lost. We don’t have cable or anything so we have to wait for it to become available on NetFlix.  We watched that show and finished the entire series in a few weeks.

I was personally devastated by the way Lost ended.

Since then,  we haven’t been able to find a show to switch over to.  Sure we have watched the entire series of King of The Hill more times than I can remember but we haven’t found anything that really motivated us to sit down and watch it regularly.

However,  we recently began watching the show Supernatural and we are freaking addicted.  Lizze and I steal a few hours a night,  as often as possible,  so we can watch 2 or 3 episodes.  We are currently in the middle of season 2.

I’m sure some people would hear this and think Lizze and I are pretty sad to think this qualifies as quality time together.

To them I would say something like,  as special needs parents we don’t have the luxury of spending the typical quality time together.  Instead we chose to spend whatever time we can find with quality people,  each other.  Sometimes that all you get. Honestly,  it enough for us.

I hope you all put there have your own version of quality time.  Whether your single or with someone,  it’s so important to have some time to yourself or with your significant other.  We are living very stressful lives and if we want to survive,  we need to take care of ourselves.

It’s not selfish,  it’s survival.

Relocation 11/16/2011

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I just wanted to take a second and thank everyone for all your support. I want to thank the McCabe’s for taking it upon themselves to reach out and help my family by launching a fundraiser that you can read about in the stickied post at the top of my home page.

Thank you for all the generous donations that will assist in our relocation. Please remember,  do not feel obligated to help.  :-)

I thought I would update you all as to the progress of my search.

I have been searching everyday via Realtor.com and the local papers.  Nothing has turned up thus far.  Again, I want to make sure that we do this right the first time.

I will keep you all updated as to the progress.  Thank you again for all the love and support you have shown my family.

Please have a good afternoon :-)

Fattest Squirrel EVER

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

This is completely off topic,  however,  I thought it was pretty funny.  My neighbor loves squirrels.  He actually makes them little tiny peanut butter sandwiches.  He’s actually one of our nice neighbor’s. It just kills me when I see these squirrels scratch at his door when they are hungry. Then they sit there eating these tiny sandwiches.

Anyway, this squirrel is so fat that it can barely squeeze under the fence anymore. This thing is like a regulation size football, with a tail.
I just thought is was humorous and wanted to share.  :-)

Hope everyone is having a good day….

Today’s Victory 11/15/2011

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

While some people would look at this and not see the victory,  I do.  As a special needs parent,  I have learned to see the bigger picture.

Why is this a victory?  Well the answer is simple. Emmett has two different kinds of food,  on one plate.  This never happens.

Not only is the food coexisting on the same plate but they are actually touching.  This is also a rarity.

Way to go Emmett.  I wanted to share this because I was really excited to witness this.

While it’s true that my boys struggle many areas,  I’m so proud of who they are and all the progress that have made,  both big and small.  :-)

Scary thoughts

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Gavin told me something yesterday,  that had gotten kinda lost in light of all the running around we had to do.
While on the way home from school and on the way to therapy,  he informed me that he’s having scary thoughts at school now.

What does scary thoughts mean?  That’s a very good question.  Honestly,  no one really knows for sure.  However,  the common assertion amongst all the specialists is that scary thoughts is Gavin’s way of describing hallucinations.

Gavin,  while extremely intelligent,  lacks the ability to articulate much of what he experiences.  Scary thoughts is the best way he can describe what he’s experiencing.

The problem with not knowing for sure what he means is just that,  not knowing for sure what he means.

It’s so difficult when you are dealing with a child as complex as Gavin because their just isn’t alot we know with absolute certainty. Despite Gavin’s best attempts to explain what he’s experiencing,  he just can’t do so in a manner the really helps to clarify anything.  The only thing we know for sure,  is that he is experiencing something that is very upsetting to him.

As his father,  it’s frustrating and heartbreaking,  to not be able to know for sure what is going on.  We do know that the medications are helping.  However,  when he tells us about the scary thoughts we are left to wonder whether of not his meds are still working.

We have to then,  meet with the doctors and based on what we do know,  make a decision as to how to address this situation,  if at all.

We get torn between wanting to provide him relief and not wanting to further medicate him.
This is never easy….
