#Autism, Seizures and EEG’s: Gavin

Sorry for the delay is getting this up but I fell asleep early last night.. :-)

I already shared what happened with the neurologist,  as far as Elliott is concerned.  What I haven’t done yet is getting into what went down with Gavin.
Traditionally,  Gavin is significantly more complex and honestly,  that an understatement.  I’m gonna keep this short and sweet because I’m just super tired today and the words are blending together.

Basically,  Gavin tolerated the exam very well.  They spent a lot of time on Gavin’s reflexes,  or rather,  trying to find them.

The doctor took me back to his office and actually showed me the EEG results for Gavin as well. Gavin is clearly having seizures and for the life of me,  I can’t remember the name of them.  These are more background seizures.  Let me give you an example of what I mean.  In this example,  Gavin will be saying the alphabet.

Basically, Gavin experiences things  like this,  A, B, C, D, E, F…………..G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P……….. Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z.

Gavin’s seizures seem to be more like someone hits the pause button. He essentially freezes for short period of time and them picks up where he left off,having no memory of the pause.

These episodes were triggered by hyperventilation, flashing lights and sleep. This might explain the bedwetting as well.  Of course,  I forgot to mention that yesterday though. In Gavin’s case,  it’s pretty clear cut. The reason is hasn’t been picked up until now is likely because Gavin’s seizures don’t present with any obvious symptoms.

Gavin seems to zone out at times but we he also gets lost in what he’s doing as well,  so it’s tough to tell the difference.

The reason we are seeing more problems lately is that Gavin was on Depacote for a really long time.  This was used for management of his bipolar symptoms,  but was likely treating the seizures as well.

They all want to do extensive genetic testing as well. There are specific disorders that were mentioned that I can’t remember.

We restart Depacote tonight and hope that will help to control his seizures.  Now that we know what we are looking for,  we’ll have to keep a closer eye on him.

I don’t even know to say anymore. I’m so far beyond overwhelmed that I don’t know what to even say….. :-(

Emmett’s fever has broken

Emmett’s fever has broken.  That’s great news,  as it looks as though we can avoid the ER tonight. However,  Emmett has been vomiting for the last 30 minutes. 

It’s safe to say the he’s returned all the Tylenol we gave him.

Now all we need to do is keep him hydrated and hope his fever stays away until he can have more Tylenol and Advil,  in a few hours…

It’s heartbreaking to see how he reacts to being sick.  He’s just snuggled with Lizze and covering his mouth so he doesn’t vomit again.  My poor,  sweet Emmett John,  I hope you feel better soon.

Please say a prayer for Mr. Emmett John

We just heard back from the pediatrician’s office about Emmett.  We were told today,  that on the off chance his fever hits 103°F,  we need to call in.

When they called us back a little bit ago,  they told us to give him some Tylenol on top of the Advil he had over an hour ago.  If his fever doesn’t break in the next 90 minutes,  we have to get him into the ER.

Lizze’s parents are on standby to come get the boys in the event we end up in the ER tonight. 

Please God,  just let the fever break.  He’s miserable and a trip to the hospital will be traumatizing for both and us.  The local hospitals aren’t always very Autism Aware and so things don’t always go well.
We need Autism Awareness,  even in the medical community.

Is it bedtime yet…..how about now?

I’m the kind of person that’s likes to take advantage of every moment with my kids. Their only little for a short time..right? 

Having said that,  if I could fast forward to bedtime tonight I would…  Elliott and Gavin are doing pretty well but Emmett is impossible right now.  I don’t know what has gotten into him but whatever it was must have been laced with hyperactivity,  defiance,  aggression and a pinch of crazy.

He is just all over the place and it seems as though he enjoys wreaking havoc on every one in the house.

In reality,  he’s getting a reaction from the boys and that’s the pay off for him.  No matter how many times I explain to the boys,  especially Elliott,  not to react,  they never seem to catch on.

Right now,  Emmett begins a chain reaction that ends with Elliott freaking out,  Gavin melting down and Lizze and I looking for the closest circus that we can both run away to. 

I just need to make it 2 hours.  That’s it,  just 2 hours.  When I say it out loud like that it doesn’t seem so bad.  However,  in real life,  it swear to God the clock is rolling backwards………

Bumps along the way

Fridays plans have had to change.  When we arrived home today from picking up Lizze,  we were met with a surprise. Dominion left a little present in the form of a shut off tag.

Truth be told,  we have always struggled to meet our expenses,  at least more recently.  However,  since the van was stolen,  things have been a bit more challenging.

That goddamn van getting stolen is like the gift that keeps on giving.

I managed to get it turned back on but not until tomorrow,  sometime between the hours of 7am and 11pm. I explained that I really could use it back on tonight but they weren’t moved. We sent Gavin and Elliott to Lizze’s parents because they need showers and baths. 

Her mom is taking them to school so I can wait around all day for them to turn it back on. I realize it’s my fault and all but I’m doing my best.

I know there are many other special needs families out there facing the same or even worse struggles.  I would love to see these companies be a bit more understanding.  I realize it’s wishful thinking but I can still dream.

I hope that everyone out their struggling,  knows that they aren’t alone.  Hang in there.  :-)

Isn’t #Autism enough?

We have some news that is difficult to process on the Elliott front.  We met with Dr. Reynolds on Monday to discuss other medication options to help manage Elliott’s extreme anxiety.

We discussed Elliott’s rather extreme reaction to the very low dose of Zoloft and our obvious concerns. This is where things got a bit scary. The main concern at this point is bipolar disorder.  This was exactly how Gavin presented years ago.

This was something Lizze and I were afraid of when we experienced his reaction.  Nothing is for sure but it’s something we will have to keep an eye on going forward.

I’ll be totally honest with you.  This scares me to death.  Elliott was my most typical baby now this.  It feels like another loss.  :-(

Tonight Elliott began his new medication,  Risperdal.  He’s on a very low dose,  at least compared to what Gavin was on. We are starting out with .25mg twice a day.

He actually swallowed the pill,  the first time and without any problems.  At least we have that as a positive.

Based on how badly he reacted to Zoloft, we are keeping him home from school so we can keep a close eye on him.  We have already talked to the school and they are aware. 

Hopefully,  this will help him?  Hopefully,  we don’t have anywhere near the problems we had with the Zoloft.

Elliott’s already running a fever

It’s only been a few hours since Elliott received his vaccines and he’s already running a fever. It’s not unexpected for this to happen but they did warn us that he may have a reaction because he has in the past.

He’s already missing school because of the fever and hopefully that will be it…

We will be watching him closely tonight and tomorrow.
