We lost another member of our family this week

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Please keep Lizze’s family in your thoughts and prayers.  She lost her great uncle this week and calling hours are Thursday evening.

We’ve lost 8 friends and family members this year and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

I really appreciate your positive thoughts…

Thank you to the supervisor at Jobs and Family Services

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

There is finally a light at the end of the tunnel and we should arrive at that destination no later than Friday afternoon.

Lizze got a call from a supervisor at Jobs and Family Services this afternoon.

She explained that she can’t do anything until Friday.  If our caseworker hasn’t pushed the button on my family’s account, her supervisor will do it for her.

I’m not sure that I understand the logic of this policy but all we have to do is make it until Friday. Basically, we have one day left and we will be able to finally go full grocery shopping for the first time since the end of June.

It’s been a really, really long month but we’ve made it this far.  We’ve had some help along the way and for that, I’m humbly grateful.

I was able to pick up a few odds and ends today but nothing significant.  Friday will be a really good day and I’ll put something in the crock pot.

I’m so grateful that we don’t have to try and make it through the weekend.

He’s being a little stinker

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Gavin‘s having a rough day.  He’s been very, very bossy with his brothers.  They aren’t liking this much and Gavin just doesn’t seem to get it.

There’s been a bit of tension and a few timeouts.

I’m not sure what’s gotten in to him today but he’s being a little stinker……..

Today’s #Autism Fact: 07/24/2013

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

One of my goals for this site is to help spread accurate Autism Awareness.  This involves sharing information about Autism that is not based on opinion or stereotype.

Today’s Autism fact is one that I feel is extremely important and very commonly ignored.

Autism affects roughly 2,000,000 people in the United States alone.  Each one of those people touched by Autism, it’s impacted in a different way.  Simply because two people share the same diagnosis, doesn’t mean they share all the same symptoms and characteristics.

Every person with Autism has their own personality and unique state of being.

Assuming that everyone with Autism is the same is completely erroneous.  Each person is unique and  very likely has unique needs.

It’s best to recognize every person with Autism as a unique individual and get to know them for who they are.  While there are often commonalities amongst people with Autism, Autism by its very nature is a spectrum disorder, meaning everyone has the potential to be affected differently.

Share your most embarrassing #Autism related moment

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Let’s be honest, most of us have experienced moments with our Autistic child that were embarrassing.  Being embarrassed is a natural  human response and nothing to be ashamed of.

I thought that we could share our embarrassing moments.

Chances are we could all use a laugh.  I’ll share mine with you first.

This involves Gavin and a trip to the local Chinese buffet.  When we were being seated by the hostess, Gavin said, in a really loud voice, “hey you all look exactly the same”.

I wanted to crawl into a hole and die.

How about you?

I hope this makes you smile

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I haven’t done one of these in a while.  However, while at Dr. Pattie’s office yesterday I snapped this picture.  I was taking pictures of Elliott and Emmett having a noodle fight.

If you look in the background, you’ll see Gavin doing God only knows what.

It’s pretty funny because I didn’t even notice this until after the fact.  I think Gavin was pretending to run away scared.

Honestly, I don’t care what he was actually doing because he was having fun and wasn’t hurting anyone.

I thought you all might get a smile out of this one. I know I did.  🙂

Diving into the world of the “visibly challenged”

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

As per our Tuesday night ritual, we met with Dr. Pattie.  We were discussing Elliott and his anxiety.  Dr.  Pattie gave us a few things that we can try, that will help to empower Elliott.  I’ll let you know how that goes.

The discussion spun back around to Gavin and how he’s doing at home.

Behaviorally, I can’t complain because he’s doing really well.  That said, we are having problems as a result of his missing filter and current psychological status.

Gavin’s never had much of a filter and simply says whatever he’s thinking.  He has no concept of what appropriate is, especially in mixed company. I don’t think that he intends to offend or upset anyone, at least not all the time.

He’s essentially a 13 year old toddler that lacks the social graces and that all important thing called common sense.

Gavin will tell his brothers things without thinking twice about whether or not their little ears should be hearing something like that. This comes in the form of jokes or even telling them about his dreams. He has some really disturbing dreams sometimes.

I tell him all the time to run this stuff by Lizze or myself before sharing with anyone else.  He never remembers.

My guess is that many of you out there know what I mean when I refer to Gavin’s filter as missing.

The other concern is once again his psychosis.  He was telling Dr. Pattie, Lizze and myself all about where he lives.  We learned that he has a weapons closet and that Sonic is now made out of crystals.

The rest I didn’t really understand but I know that it’s not a good sign.

Unfortunately, at this point in the game, there isn’t a whole lot that we can do. So far, what he’s doing is concerning and maybe a touch disturbing but not dangerous, at least in the physical sense.

The silver lining is that behaviorally, he’s doing really well.  He’s helpful and cooperative.

I’m really concerned about him but at the same time, I’m proud of how well he’s doing at the moment.
