Congratulations to my boys 🙂

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I wanted to brag a bit more about Elliott and Gavin.  I told you all about their martial arts promotion on Tuesday.  I wanted to share the actual certificates with you as well.

I finally got around to snapping a few pictures and getting them posted.

I’m so proud of both of them.  :-)

Fun fact

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

This is more of a less fun and more fact thing but I figured I’d share it anyway.

As relaxing as it sounds to have a glass of wine and a bowl of ice cream, it turns out that they really don‘t mix well.

I would suggest either one or the other but not both.  Unless you want to put the breaks on relaxing evening with an upset stomach. Yuck…….

What have you resorted to in order to get your child with #Autism to eat?

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Dietary issues are pretty common when dealing with kids on the #autism spectrum. Factor in things like food allergies and sensory issues and it really can get complicated. I can’t stress this enough. I wish people would throw away the old saying that if their hungry they’ll eat. I don‘t think that it applies here.

We aren’t talking about just picky eaters. These kids have a physical aversion to certain colors, smells, tastes and textures. They’re not being difficult. In many cases the child will go hungry rather than eat something that will upset them. When you add in food allergies or special diets, you’re essentially removing options that can make getting them to actually eat, extremely difficult. My Elliott’s the same way. We met with a dietitian yesterday to seek advice. Elliott is losing weight and hasn’t grown in the last year or so. One of the things we are focusing on, aside from avoid tree nuts, is increasing his caloric intake. I’ll be honest, I’ve basically violated many of the rules in parenting 101. At times, I have resorted to bribery, in order to get him to eat. Tonight, for example, I ordered pizza because I knew he would eat it. I’ve been trying to get him to eat all day and at most he would nibble and that’s it. I don‘t want to hound him or have him develope unhealthy eating habits, but the bottom line is that he needs to eat. I know many of you face the same problems, perhaps for different reasons. I’m so tired of trying to explain to people how much sensory processing issues can complicate dietary things. I think it’s a difficult concept to grasp. Thankfully, most of our family is on board. I still get the odd, if he’s really hungry, he’ll eatfrom people. I was thinking it would be a good thing to talk about this and share our experience, tips and tricks. How have you coped with this type of dietary struggle? Please share your story in the comments below. :-)

Lost and Tired plans for 2013

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

The approach that I have taken with Lost and Tired is why I think it’s so successful.  I don’t believe in telling people how to do things. I think that everyone‘s situation is different. There may be similarities but also differences.

I’m a huge proponent of simply sharing ones experience and allowing others to take from it what they may.

The way I see it is, I’m Lost and Tired, who am I to tell you that to do.

Having said that, I also believe in leading by example. I like to share with you all what has worked for my family and what hasn’t.  What this does is present information that you can use to put something together that works for you family or situation.

By bringing everyone together and creating an ongoing dialog, we are all able to learn from each other.

I’m my opinion, experience in the best teacher.  Sometimes it’s comforting to hear from someone who’s actually lived through what you are struggling with.

It helps to know that you’re not alone and that someone has already been down this path before and can offer advice or guidance if needed.

This of course, should never replace competent medical advice but it’s sometimes good for peace of mind.

I’m really proud of how well this site is doing and how many people are sharing there knowledge and experience. I’ve personally made so many friends and to be quite honest, I feel like a big family.

I hope you all feel the same way.

As we carry into the holiday season and cross the threshold into the new year I hope to continue to grow, learn and share, in new and exciting ways.

You have all taught me so much.  I only hope I have been able to do the same.  :-)

Today’s #Autism Victory: Dene the cat

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Elliott pulled this out of his backpack this morning before going to school.  I just love it.  This shows that he’s focusing on something other than Mario for once.

I thought this was really cool and wanted to be sure to share this with all of you. :-)

How do you handle the Christmas Holiday with your #Autistic child

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I try to have this discussion every year about this time.  I personally enjoy and actually learn quite a bit about how your family handles the Christmas Holiday.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas, I realize that.  The question is basically, how do you handle the holiday season? This tends to be a very overstimulating time of year for many kids and adults only the #Autism spectrum.

It would be great if we could share some tips or tricks on how you minimize the holiday stress for your child on the sectrum.

In the comments below, please share with us, how you handle the Christmas/Holiday season? How do you make it easier for your child with #Autism? How does your child on the spectrum respond to all the bright light, noise and chaos of said holiday season?
