Spring Time Sensory Friendly Fun

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Friday evening, Lizze and I decided to take the boys to the playground and take advantage of the sunshine and 50°F weather.

We have found that in the absence of enough occupational therapy, the playground is a great place for getting the wiggles out and having some sensory friendly fun.

Lizze and I love taking pictures of our family and I was goofing around with the boys and shooting some video.

This is the result….

His desire to see is stronger than his sensory issues

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Emmett never fails to amaze me.  As sensory sensitive as he is, his desire to actually see his world is stronger than the sensory issues screaming st him to take the glasses off.

I’m so proud of him.  :-)

Today’s #Autism and #Sensory Victory

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I’m so proud of Emmett because he has taken on his life with glasses and hit the ground running.  I was so afraid that he wouldn’t be able to tolerate the glasses and it would become a major battle.

I honestly thought we would be fighting against sensory issues…

As it turns out, Emmett loves his glasses and even though right now they are only reading glasses, his eyesight is so bad that they are actually helping.  His prescription glasses will be in next week and he’s really excited.

He keeps telling us how much better he can see with his glasses.  He’s just too stinking cute.  :-)

Life with Stickers

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Who doesn’t love stickers? Stickers are a sign of accomplishment.  When we were kids, a sticker on our school work meant a job well done.

Emmett is no exception to this sticker loving rule, although he takes it to a bit of an extreme.

He loves wearing stickers like there some kind of tattoo.  Thankfully, this ink is removable when he’s done.

You can see in the picture how happy he is, covered in stickers.  Which, strikes me as a bit odd.  For a kid with severe sensory issues, one would think that this would be unpleasant for him.

How does your child with #Autism watch TV?

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

This is completely random but I thought it could be interesting nonetheless. So here’s what happened. Emmett has this thing about watching TV while hanging upside down. I suspect this is sensory related but it could also be an Emmett-ismas well. I thought for today’s discussion, we could share the peculiar ways our kids like to watch TV.

#Autism, impulse control and collateral damage

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Gavin has been having a rough morning.  Not so much in the way of behavioral issues per say,  but rather controlling his body.

Gavin had earned back the ability to help his brothers with video games,  something he greatly values.

The problem is that Gavin is literally running all over the place.  He seems to have lost his walking feet and as a result of him racing to get to the game controller before Elliott did,  he smashed Elliott in the face with his head.

Elliott’s cheek swelled up a bit and he was in pain.  However,  he’ll live.  The problem is that this was completely avoidable.  Gavin just can’t seem to slow down.

We decided that for the rest of the day,  TV and video games will be unavailable to Gavin.  This was done so that he can focus on what’s going in around him, instead of tunnel visioning on the TV or a game.

He accepted the consequences and we have all moved on.

I have a very bad feeling that this is going to be a very long day.

**Thanks for reading**
