Do you care what other people think?

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

This is pretty simple to ask and perhaps a bit more difficult to answer. I’m asking you this question as it relates to parenting but more specifically, special needs parenting.

Do you care what other people think?
Personally, I have learned not to wear my heart on my sleeve, so to speak. This is especially true when putting yourself out there, as I have.

Having said that, as a special needs parent, there aren’t a whole lot of absolutes, especially when it comes to parenting kids with Autism, or kids with Autism and very, very serious mental heath issues.

Generally speaking I can take a few punches from people over parenting decisions my wife and I have made. Whatever….right?

However, I tend to become more aware of criticism when it’s over something that is impossibly difficult to manage and we are absolutely doing the best we can.

It’s really easy to sit back and watch our lives through your computer monitor but it’s something entirely different to walk even 10 feet in our shoes. I would imagine that’s true for a lot of you out there. People shouldn’t judge unless they’ve walk a few feet in your shoes.

That stuff really gets to me.

I don’t so much take it to heart or feel like, dang, they’re right, I’m a terrible parent. It just sucks to have someone armchair quarterbacking. Most of the time, I highly doubt that they have any experience and they just like to stir things up.

Even so…. It still gets to me at times…

How about you? Do people’s thoughts and comments about your parenting ever get to you or do you not care what they think?

What’s the most rewarding part of parenting a child with #Autism?

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

What’s the most rewarding part of parenting a child with #Autism? It’s a pretty straightforward question that I would love for you to answer, as honestly as possible.

For me personally, the most rewarding part is how my kids have taught me to view the world.  I don’t take things for granted and I completely appreciate the little things in life.

Now it’s your turn.

What’s the most rewarding part of raising a child with #Autism?

Please join the My #Autism Help Forum and help me to help others

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Do you ever find yourself wishing that you could talk to someone that understands? Someone that get’s it. Personally, I know what that’s like and I decided to do something about it.

I want to encourage everyone to join the My Autism Help Forums.

The My Autism Help Forums are designed by me and run on the industry standard Autism Help 512_512forum software, vBulletin. Because I own, manage and enforce rules in the forums, they are a safe place to speak your mind, vent or ask/answer questions. There is a zero tolerance for bullying or harassing. I want everyone to feel free to share without fear of repercussions from other members.

We don’t always have to agree with each other. I do however, require that you treat everyone with dignity and respect.

The forums are readable by anyone but you can only post or comment if you are a member. Membership is free and is a quick and painless process. You do need to verify your registration via email but that’s it.

I recently rebuilt the forums from scratch and reorganized them in a way that’s much more user friendly and accessible.

Right now I’m simply working on getting the conversation started once again.

Stop on by and introduce yourself in the Meet and Greet forum or jump in on a conversation that strikes your interest. There are parents in there right now, looking for advice from you. Believe it or not, you can make a big difference in someone’s life by simply sharing your experience.

Let’s get these forums rocking once again and provide each other with support. Help me rebuild the community and be part of something truly amazing.

I know it’s hard it can be a little scary to open up, especially to people you don’t know. Having said that, I truly believe in my heart, that by taking the plunge, you will find a wealth of information and experience that could benefit your life.

You can find the My Autism Help Forums either by clicking the link at the top of this post or the My Autism Help Forums logo to the right.

If you have any problems with registration, please let me know so I can fix it.

There are 2 easy ways to access the Autism Help Forums via your mobile device.

It’s the little things

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Just got home from the doctors with Elliott. Considering how anxious Elliott was, he did very, very well. Thankfully, Elliott didn’t have an ear infection but he did have some buildup that needed cleaned out.

His lungs are clear right now but he has a pretty nasty sinus infection.

Our doctor o lay uses antibiotics when needed and apparently it’s needed. We also got a script for prednisone, in case his breathing becomes a problem.

Outside of that, we’re better off keeping Elliott home for another day or so, which takes us right into the 4 day weekend. Needless to say, it’s going to be a really long week. I already called the school and we will be forwarding the letter to them.

The key to our success today with this was simple distraction and redirection.

I tried to keep his mind busy on other things.  Plus I was acting a bit goofy and was able to make him crack a smile and even giggle. 🙂
