The sensory friendly Christmas tree

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Today is the day we put up our sensory friendly Christmas tree. We use an artificial tree that doesn‘t have the smell of pine, which I happen to really like,  but the rest of my family doesn‘t.

We have also moved to plane white lights.  Gone are the flashing, chasing or strobe lights.

Bright, Shiney, and noisy ornaments have gone extinct in our house as well.  Homemade paper ornaments are all you’ll find on our Christmas tree.

While it may not be as bright and festive as most others, it’s also not going to push my kids and wife over the edge and into an overstimulated free fall.

As far as decorating around the house, we keep things very simple.

In a family with 4 people on the #Autism spectrum, most often times we find that lees is more.

Um..can you say overstimulated

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Ever since Gavin’s meltdown a week ago today,  that led to his admission to the psychiatric unit at Akron Children’s Hospital,  Elliott and Emmett have be extremely overstimulated.

They have both been bouncing off the walls and couches because they have so much excess,  anxiety related energy.

Since Gavin’s come home,  it’s just gotten worse.  They are more wound up now than before. I’m not sure how to help them to come down,  so to speak. I think they are torn between excitement and fear when it comes to their feelings about the big brother.

It’s got to be overwhelming for them and hopefully, as time goes on,  they will settle down.

It’s unbelievable just how something like a violent meltdown and the hospitalization of their big brother,  impacts their lives.

I’m losing my appetite for meltdowns

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I’m very quickly losing my appetite for Gavin’s meltdowns. Truthfully,  I’ve never had a taste for them but I was able to tolerate them.  Anymore however,  they are becoming more and more difficult to deal with.

We just finished up another meltdown a few minutes ago.  I didn’t sleep well so I’m a bit on the grouchy side this morning.

I told Gavin that if this behavior continues,  we are going to have no choice but to send him somewhere. I told him, in a not so patient voice, that I have to ensure that his little brothers have a safe and nurturing environment to grow up in and his behavior is making that almost impossible.

He was only upset because he was in trouble,  he doesn’t care that he is terrifying his little brothers and making Lizze’s head hurt worse.

I honestly don’t think that Gavin has a conscience. I say that because having a conscience is a developmental stage or milestone that Gavin simply never reached. At least that’s my understanding of what happened. This is what his doctors have long suspected.

Something like that is very challenging to live with for a multitude of reasons.  Most of the challenge revolves around teaching right and wrong as well as helping him to understand how his actions impact others around him.

The idea of having to send him to some type of inpatient care is becoming easier to swallow.  Gavin’s meltdown has set off meltdowns in both Elliott and Emmett.  They are completely overwhelmed and overstimulated.

Life is not going to be easy today.
