A morning filled with Sensory Overload and Meltdowns

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Our morning has only been here a short while and already it’s filled with screaming and meltdowns. It’s like Emmett started his day overstimulated.

Perhaps he didn’t sleep well last night or maybe had bad dreams.

Two things set him off this morning.  The first thing was his pet ball. This is a light up bounce ball on an elastic string that straps to his wrist.

He drags this thing behind him and it gets caught on things or tangled up.  It got both caught up and tangled this morning and he just lost it.

After we got through that crisis, he was definitely primed and ready to explode.

The next explosive meltdown happened after he got himself dressed.  The shorts he put on touched his knees.  That’s it.  His shorts touched his knees and rather than change them or take them back off, he had a massive meltdown.

Lizze and I tried for 20 minutes to help him through it.

When this meltdown passed, he wanted dry Ramon Noodles for breakfast. We decided not to pick that battle and I think that it was a wise decision.

I believe he gets a sensory fix off of the dry crunchy noodles and it helped to ground him.  It certainly helped this morning, there’s no question about that.

Right now he’s crunching on his breakfast and playing Pokemon with his brothers.  Hopefully, his day has changed course and he’s headed to a better destination. At this point, the outlook is promising but we won’t know until we get there.

When your kids have a meltdown, is there a calming technique that you have found that works well?

Good morning, how are your kids doing today?

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

My boys are doing pretty well today.  Emmett doesn’t appear to be in the fever flare, which is fantastic. Gavin’s doing well this morning and while Elliott’s a bit on the whiny side, he’s well also.

How are your kids doing today? Just so that you know, I’m not looking for anything in particular.  You can share the good and the bad. Sometimes just saying it can help you feel better.

Hello Allergies

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

It’s really weird.  About 2 years ago, I developed seasonal allergies for the first time in life. I went the first 33 years of my life without them.

Over the weekend I ran out of my allergy meds and couldn’t get them refilled until today.

I was fine all weekend. Even after cutting the grass.

That said, I wake up this morning and can’t stop sneezing.  My right eye won’t stop watering either.  It’s pretty miserable..

I picked up my prescription but I probably won’t feel better until tomorrow morning

There’s no doubt it could be worse and I’m grateful  that Zyrtec controls them so well.  I’m so looking forward for tomorrow.  Perhaps, if Lizze is feeling up to it, I’ll take some Benadryl to get me through the day.  I might get sleepy, so Lizze would have to be okay with the boys.

It’s amazing how something as simple as allergies can have such a profound impact.

Good morning. How’s your day going?

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I was just about to say how well the morning was going on my end but before I could even write those words, Emmett began melting down.

There goes the morning but hopefully we can recover and have a decent afternoon.

How’s your day going so far?

A morning filled with good choices

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I have to give Elliott mad props this morning because he got himself ready for school, ate breakfast and took his meds without a single issue.

There are many mornings where everything is a complete disaster a d we get little to no cooperation.

Today however, Elliott showed us all, just how awesome he can do.

On a day frought with grief, as services for Lizze’s Aunt are this afternoon, this was a great start to the day.  Great work Elliott, we’re very proud of you.  🙂

Not off to a good start

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Elliott and Emmett have been at each others throats this morning.  I’m talking literally nose to nose.

We have also be bathed in screaming and yelling as well.  Gavin on the other hand is still behaving pretty well. We’re working group on some boundary issues but overall, he’s doing well so far.

The stress of him being home however, seems to be impacting get everyone, regardless of his actual behaviors.

I’m really hoping to get our routine implemented and merged with the school schedule this weekend.  This will help to smooth things out a bit

At this point, I’d be happy to just see an end to the fighting.  🙁

Fun Fact of The Day

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Despite how pleasant the books make Green Smoothies sound, I assure you, they are as nasty as they look.

I started with Green Smoothies this morning.  I’m experienced with smoothies but Green Smoothies are a different beast all together.

Green Smoothies in my experience, need to be chugged, not sipped and certainly not enjoyed.

They are however, extremely good for you.
