Nightmares

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I think in pretty darn frustrated with Gavin.  Gavin decided that it would be a good idea to tell Elliott some horror stories before they went to bed tonight.

These stories involved zombies,  decapitated people,  and a few other grossly inappropriate things.

Elliott comes downstairs to let me know why Gavin was telling him.  I call for Gavin very calmly,  even though I’m actually pretty ticked off at this point.

The moment he hits the stairs it’s an instant meltdown and drama ensues.

I wanted to know why he would say these things to his little brother again.  I say again,  because this has been an issue before and it had to be dealt with then and clearly we’re gonna have to do this again.

Gavin goes to bed and I’m left with a really nervous/anxious 5 year old who is afraid to sleep alone now.

Guess Who’s in the couch tonight.  ;-(

Gavin is driving me absolutely crazy today.  I don’t know what’s going on with him but to say he is struggling would be an understatement,  as would saying that I was merely frustrated.

Tomorrow is a new day and brings along with it a clean slate.  I just need to locate my reserve of patience and I’ll be ok….I think.

Oh…no he didn’t

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Oh yes he did.  Who did what,  you may ask?  Well,  Gavin spit on Elliott.  I don’t know what brought that on and frankly,  I don’t care.  We do not spit on people. That is completely unacceptable in the Lost and Tired house.

Before you ask,  no,  it wasn’t like he was talking and accidentally spit a little bit.  This was actually spitting on his little brother.

I’m not saying Elliott was innocent in all of this but he was the spittee and Gavin was the spitter

Oatmeal was brought back out of retirement because I don’t know what else to do in this case.  We don’t hit our kids and very little works on Gavin outside of oatmeal.  For those of you wondering what the oatmeal thing is all about,  here’s the dime store version.  Basically,  with Gavin we have exhausted every other option we could think of and nothing works.  So,  when Gavin needs to be disciplined,  we will replace his next meal with oatmeal.

Gavin likes oatmeal but in cases like this the oatmeal is made with water and no sugar is added.  He dislikes this greatly but is more upset about being held accountable for his actions then he is about having to eat the oatmeal.  It’s outside the box but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.

So tonight Gavin will have oatmeal for dinner and then the slate is wiped clean.  I’m at a loss as to what should be done but nothing was not an option. I also don’t want to make to big of a deal out of this either and this seemed to strike a nice balance.

Have any of you fine folks had to deal with spitting like this before?  What have to done to address it and has it worked?

Aspergers, choices and the behavior plan

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Gavin and I met with Dr. Pattie for about an hour tonight. There were no snacks and no prizes at the end. We sat there and talked. We tried to get a better understanding of where Gavin is coming from when he makes the choices he does. I don’t think we are any better off right now because Gavin really didn’t make a whole lot of sense when he was talking. At a few points he started to get worked up but we quickly responded and defused the situation.

While we don’t have a better understanding of his motives he did put together a pseudo behavior plan. Gavin made a list of ways he can “defuse” himself when he gets frustrated. These would be better options then melting down or hurting himself. What concerns me the most right now is that he was only upset tonight because he couldn’t have a snack and because he had to have oatmeal. At no point did he show remorse for injuring and terrifying Elliott or waking up his sick little brother, seemingly on purpose. He didn’t give them a single thought. That worries me because we are already concerned about sociopathy and the fact he only seems to care about what happens to himself and not about the other people affected by his behavior makes me nervous.

Dr. Pattie said that it’s very self-centered but that it could simply be Aspergers and adolescence. It could also be coming from a darker place and right now we just don’t know. We have to continue to hold him accountable for his actions as he CLEARLY knows what he’s doing. I’m worried that he is slowly turning into his biological father or heading down that same path and that would NOT be a good thing as evidenced by the fact that he abused and abandoned Gavin. Hopefully we can find a way to reach him and keep him from going down that path. Gavin is a GOOD kid that just makes “LESS THAN GOOD” choices. I believe he can prevail but it’s going to take some work…..and patience…….AND……a whole lot of outside the box thinking.

HUGE meltdown 7/06/2011

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I have be having to correct Gavin all morning. I’m nit talking nit picking either. Relatively major issues are the only ones we try to focus our limited resources on.

If there was ever question as to whether or not he had control over this there isn’t anymore….at least for me right now. With out going into the gory details I had to intervene 4 times before Elliott actually got hurt. I was giving Gavin the benefit of the doubt and clearly that was a mistake. Elliott’s fine and Gavin didn’t do it on purpose but he was careless and wasn’t listening.

After Elliott got hurt….that was it. I had warned Gavin already that this would happen if he continued. So he was awarded oatmeal for lunch. The started to loose it. I was trying to keep him in control downstairs cause Emmett is sick and finally just fell asleep. Gavin started to self injure and I told him that if he continues doing this infront of him brother that it would be oatmeal for dinner as well.

What does Gavin do? He looks me right in the eyes and starts trying to break his fingers, making Elliott cry. When he realizes Elliott is crying he looks at Elliott and does it more aggressively. I said, that’s it your done. You have oatmeal for dinner as well.

I escorted him upstairs and the second he got in front of my room where Emmett was sleeping he launched himself into the air and smashed his feet into the floor. I told him if he chooses to do ANYTHING that causes his sick little brother to wake up he would have oatmeal for dinner as well. The second he gets into his room he starts screaming at the top of his lungs. I very calmly reminded him that he is quite welcome to scream but he must do it into his pillow. Once again he looks me straight in the eye and screams again. I reminded him once more and closed. A few minutes later he exculated to the point that he woke his brother up.

So after beating himself up, hurting and terrifying one brother, he woke the sick on up and so he will have oatmeal for breakfast as well.

Many people might think this is a bit overzealous but he made the choice to do these things each and every time. I gave him more then 6 chances to avoid this and instead he chose to disrupt everyone around him. Besides his gastrointestinal doctor said the more oatmeal he eats the better.

I’m not sure what else to do. This whole thing makes me feel sick and I get NO enjoyment out of this.

Gavin has plans

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

My little brother called me and wants to take Gavin for some one on one time. He going to take him hiking and maybe see some caves in the morning. Tim (my brother) is pretty excited. I think this will be a great experience for both of them.

They are packing a lunch and will eat
it on the trail.  Gavin will be picked up around 9am and will be back sometime in the afternoon.

He’ll be just fine.. Wait am I telling you that or myself?
