The decisions been made: Please pray for my family

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I want to thank you all,  so much for all the support.  I wanted to let you know what is happening at this point. We reported the change in behavior to his neurologist at Akron Children’s Hospital,  as they had instructed us to do.

They have referred us to a place called Belleview Pines,  in Youngstown.  It’s about an hour and a half away and we have to be there by 5pm tonight.

The problem aside from the logistics I mentioned earlier is that because of Gavin’s unique and we’ll,  complex medical needs,  they may not be able to take him.

However,  they can help us find a place that can.

I have a few hours before I need to leave and I’ll spend it trying to pull together resources in order to make this happen.

I have absolutely no idea where this is going to lead or how long it will take.  We have tentative arrangements for the boys but are flying blind the rest of the way. We may take someone with us because of safety concerns while in the car.

I haven’t figured that out either.

We can use all the thoughts and prayers you can muster for this one.  I have absolutely no idea how this is going to go.

**Thanks for reading**

More Gunfire tonight: 05/02/2012

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I’m laying here in bed,  trying to sleep and there have been several rounds of gunfire. So far I’ve heard over a dozen shots tonight in the span of only a few minutes.

The first was like,  bang…..bang…..bang…..bang.

The second was like,  bang.bang.bang.bang.bang.bang.bang.bang.

I just called 911 and the cops are on their way to check things out.

I also made Lizze turn the lights out and come upstairs because I don‘t want her to be a random target. This is really sad that it’s come down to fearing for our lives,  not to mention scary.

I’ve spoken with my neighbors recently and everyone is scared for their lives.

I thinking that moving is going to have to take center stage because we haven’t even hit summer yet and already its getting bad.

At this point,  I don‘t know what to do. As with many other special needs families,  we can’t afford to move,  but at the same time, we can’t afford not to.
I’ve had this idea for awhile now.  Since the police are clearly unable to address the problems of gun and gang violence,  we should use the national guard. We need some type of armed task force to come in and conduct raids on known drug and gangs locations.

It’s pretty common knowledge where these places are but nothing is ever done about them.

Personally,  I just want to get as far away from here as possible. I want my family safe from stray bullets and drive by shootings.

This type of fear makes an already seemingly impossible task seem that much more challenging.

Please stay safe everyone.

Time to join me and get Fit4Autism

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I came up with the idea of “Fit4Autism“ last year. It’s kind of a play on word’s. However, it’s way more then that. As special needs parents we need to be able to take care of our children for as long as possible. The unfortunate truth is that many of us dedicate so much time and energy to our children that we fail to take care of ourselves.

Fit4Autism“ is a challenge I’ve issued to myself and now to you. That challenge is to start doing things to improve your overall health and fitness. Simple things like eating healthier and becoming more physically active. Parking farther away from the store (when possible) or simply walking. As a father to 3 special needs kids (all Autistic) I know how difficult it is to make the time to do this but honestly we can’t afford not to. Who will be their for our kids if we aren’t. We owe it to them as well as ourselves to be as happy and healthy as possible for as long as possible.

If you would like to join “Fit4Autism“ send and email to [email protected]

I’ll get an invite off to you right away. Everything is tracked via www.endomondo.com. My hope is that I get as many people to join as possible. There’s motivation and encouragement in numbers. Endomondo works no matter where you are in the world. The more we have the more attention we can get and the more Autism awareness we can spread. Anyone wanting to support the cause is welcomed to join. We owe our kids healthy parents and this is what I’m doing to make sure my kids have that. Join “Fit4Autism” today and improve your health while increasing Autism Awareness.

#Autism, Seizures and EEG’s: Elliott

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Elliott’s appointment was pretty straight forward.  They got a detailed history and reviewed the EEG. I chose to go with Elliott first because he was the easiest or least complicated.

Elliott was very well behaved and just played his 3DS for most of the time. The doctor was totally awesome and was great with the boys.  You could tell that he loves his job.

Now for the bad news.  Elliott had 2 small seizures during the 5 minute sleep part of the EEG.

Before we explore medication,  we decided that it would be best to do a longer study so we could qualify what was going on. They are going to schedule a 24 hour VEEG.  This will provide more detailed information and we’ll have a better idea of whether or not he needs medication.

I hope it turns out to be minor enough that he won’t need intervention,  however,  I’m at the point where I just want him to get relief from whatever is happening.

They also talked about some expansive genetic testing to see what’s going on.  Just more to add to the list of things to do.  :-(

Headache Infusion: conclusions

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Lizze had her final headache infusion session,  yesterday afternoon. She basically underwent 12 hours of pretty hardcore narcotics being pumped into her via IV.

This was split up over two days and the sole purpose was to break her five weeks old migraine.

She can only have this done one time a year,  at least as far as I know. It was almost exactly a year ago that she had this done to break a migraine that she had that lasted for months.

The good news is that it appears to have worked.  I say appears to have worked because she still pretty heavily medicated.  We should have a better idea of where we stand as time goes on.

The downside to this is that it only treats the current migraine and doesn’t prevent it from coming back

As someone that doesn’t suffer from these debilitating migraines,  I can’t imagine what it’s like. When I asked her if it was worth it,  she replied,  any amount of time without having to feel the pain of a migraine is worth it.

Here’s to hoping that Lizze can get a well deserved break from the constant migraines.

I want thank Lizze’s parents for watching the two oldest last night and my parents for getting her to the appointments.

I also want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers. I truly appreciate it…..   :-)

F*ck you time change

PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

There are few things I dislike more in this world than the time change. I mean,  I personally handle it just fine,  however, my three. Autistic boys don’t

The simple act of moving the clocks ahead by one hour is completely disruptive.  It’s like someone took their world and shook it up like a snow globe. It becomes total chaos for them and subsequently for us as well.

I say this every spring and fall because the time change is like my worst enemy.

I try to bring peace and order to our world and time change seeks to bring confusion and chaos. The confusion and chaos,  typically lasts for a few weeks.  Those few weeks are among the worst of the year.

This may sound dramatic,  but the switch to and from day light savings time is extremely disruptive.  The worst part is that their sleep schedule is thrown off.  This results in very early mornings,  following really late nights.

When it was decided that this time change would be a good idea,  I assure you,  the creators of this idea didn’t have three Autistic boys.

As I’m writing this,  Elliott has already been up for well over an hour (4:30 am). Trying to keep him from waking Emmett is not easy and it means that I must remain awake at this most unholy of hours.

This is why,  every single year I climbing to the highest roof of the tallest tower and scream, fuck you time change.
