I’m no longer a “Real Husband of Autism”

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

This will be short and sweet but I feel the need to address this.  I get added to Facebook groups all the time.  I’m apparently an admin for many of these pages and I’ve never actually visited them.

I was recently added to a page called Real Husbands of Autism and listed as an admin. I was asked first and gladly accepted.

This was fine at first because I know most of these guys and they’re all awesome.  However, there were some very distasteful things being posted and all of our names were attached.  A great many people were offended and rightfully so.

I only learned today what had happened as I haven’t spent much time over there.

With that said, I have removed myself from this Page and unliked it.  Many of my fellow Autism Dad’s have done the same.

While I didn’t have anything to do with this and honestly didn’t even see the offending post before my my fellow Autism Dad’s removed it, I want to apologize too anyone that did read it and was offended.  I was as well.

Please keep in mind that only one person was responsible for that particular post, so please don’t hold everyone accountable.  As soon as it was discovered, most of the Dad’s responded and immediately removed it.

I don’t agree with or support this type of thing and I want you all to know that I’m out.  I’ve unliked the page and removed myself from it.

My apologies to anyone that was offended.

Please Help Keep This Site Online

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I need help to keep this site online

Lost and Tired has reached a point that I’m really struggling to cover server costs, not to mention everything else required to keep both Lost and Tired and the My Autism Help Forums online. I’ve outgrown 2 servers in the past year alone and will soon reach a point that another move will have to be made. The cost associated with maintaining this site have tripled in the last year as well.

Beginning September 1st, 2013, monthly service fee’s will be coming due. I had covered all the costs through September 2013, with a single, lump sum payment last year.

August is it and I’m officially month to month with Bluehost now and if I can’t cover the fee’s, everything goes offline. If you are in a position to donate even $1, it would go a long way towards keeping this site afloat. Nothing is expected and your family must come first, but anything is appreciated and everything helps.

We all help each other and I’m really trying to do my part by providing information, experience and a high end support forums, complete with mobile app.

If you’re in a position to help me keep helping others, I would be very grateful.

You can also help in other ways as well

If you aren’t in a position to donate, there are other ways you can help. You can help by simply sharing your favorite Lost and Tired posts, stories or experiences via your social media networks. Basically, you can click the “Like” button and share something you find meaningful on Facebook, Twitter or Google+.

How does this help? Simple…..traffic. It helps to create traffic and ads on this site earn money based on traffic. It also helps me to reach out to others that I have yet to meet. Increased traffic also helps me to provide better giveaways to my readers as well.

Thank you all in advance for being such a huge part of lostandtired.com’s success. Here’s to many more years of helping the community and providing support to people who need it.

Refocusing

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

Admittedly, I’ve been pretty wrapped up in my own family lately as I’m sure you can understand.  My goal is to get back to not only sharing my family’s experience but also my thoughts and opinions on topics that impact the Autism and Special Needs community.

I know that not everyone agrees with my opinions nor do I expect them to.

I’ve tried to be a voice of reason and provide relavent information, from both sides, so that you can make educated decisions.

The My Autism Help Forums were designed to be a place for members of the special needs community to go and share experience, ask questions, find answers, a sounding board or simply a judgement free zone to vent when they need it.

I’ve been finding it more difficult to stay on top of all this because things with my own family have become extremely challenging.

Finding time to myself and my thoughts has been moved from the back burner and placed on the endangered species list. Heck, simply keeping this site physically online has proved to be both problematic and expensive.

As the school year approaches, I will find myself with a plethora of free time on my hands.

I will be able to dedicate more time to providing for my family, writing and other advocacy projects that I will be taking on.  In October, I will begin sitting on the Board for The Autism Society of Greater Akron and be moving towards establishing our very own Stark County chapter or affiliate….

Writing has been a way for me to stay centered and maintain my perspective.  It’s also becoming increasingly more difficult to do as Lizze’s health continues to decline.

With the boys in school all day, I will be able to refocus my efforts and hopefully continue to grow Lost and Tired into a beacon for the Autism and Special Needs Community.

I would love to get your thoughts on this planned refocus.  Are there topics that you would like me to speak about? Leave your thoughts, opinions and ideas in the comments below.

Update to our Electricity and Server problems

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I wanted to take a minute and update you all as to our current situation. I’ve briefly shared this on my Facebook page only because my site keeps going down. I just noticed it was back up, so I thought I could hit everyone at one time this way. It looks as though our electricity will be shut off at any moment. AEP came around about 2 hours ago to disconnect us but gave me one hour to make the payment, before returning to disconnect us.

We went ahead and tried for a medical certificate, which would buy us 30 days.

Unfortunately, Akron Children’s Hospital will now only provide a medical certificate if the absence of power will cause death to the child. They told us that a child must have a feeding tube or IV pump at home to qualify for their help. We haven’t ever needed a certificate for electricity so I was not aware of the policy change.

I didn’t have a picture that really fit this post and so I figured, why not bacon. Bacon goes with everything, right?

They most likely get swamped with requests and had to adjust their policy accordingly. I can’t say that I blame them and I’m not upset with them at all. That said, we still have the same problem. I’ve reached out to Gavin’s doctors at the Cleveland Clinic and they might be able to help. The forms have been faxed and the nurse is going to see if they can take care of this for us.

Like I said, it’s been two hours and AEP has yet to return. Only time will tell if this crisis will be averted.  Right now I have everything that can be charged, charging. I fully expect to be without power at some point today. If this all works out, well, everything needs charged anyway. 🙂 This is just one of those things that I’m not proud of but share for the purposes of transparency. It provides insight into our lives and our struggle. I want to be very clear that I’m responsible for all of this. These things are my responsibility and my responsibility alone. All I can say is that I do the very best I can with what I have to work with. Please don’t worry. This is just another obstacle in our path that we must transverse to continue moving forward.

We all face these or similar challenges, the Lost and Tired family is no exception. I just choose to share our story to help educate others.

Now, as far as the website goes………..I’m at my wits end.

lostandtired.com has been down for most of the day and part of last night. It seems to come back up briefly and then go back down. I’ve tried calling Bluehost today and the line will ring a few times and then disconnect. My guess is that they are swamped with people, like myself, trying to tell them about something they are already trying to address. It sucks because when this happens, I lose a great deal of progress and ranking. I suppose it doesn’t really matter, especially in the bigger picture.

Anyway, I’ve taken up far too much of your time already and I’ll let you all get back to your own lives. If you don’t hear from me, this is why. I will be working very intently on getting all these issues addressed.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Whatever doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. 🙂

Lost and Tired and The #Autism Society of Greater Akron: Bringing Positive Change to Stark County, Ohio

DiggGoogle+PinterestLinkedInRedditShare/Bookmark

I wanted to share with you all, how my meeting went with the Autism Society today.  In short, it was awesome.  I will be joining the board this Fall and I’m really, really excited about that.

First of all, I met some really amazing people today that I’m super excited to be working with.

Secondly, as you know, I don’t often align myself or this site with organizations and businesses because all too often they are about the money and not about the people in need.

Having said that, I will be working with the Autism Society very closely going forward and here’s why. The Autism Society and Lost and Tired share a very similar attitude and approach to all things Autism and Special Needs.

We both believe in the value and importance of sharing personal experience and educating people so that they can make informed decisions, rather than influencing their decisions, one way or the other. We both want to focus on our local communities and help the families on a local level that are dealing with Autism now as well as support the needs of the Adult Autistic community.

Research is still very important but how does that really help the families that are struggling just to make it through the day?

We also want to bridge the gap between people in the community that might hold different beliefs.  For example, you might believe vaccines are evil and I don’t.  Does that mean that we can’t work together to make the world a better place for our kids with Autism, both young and old?  Absolutely not!

We’re all part of the same family and we want to foster that mentality.

I’m really excited to be in this position because we are going to bring about positive change in Stark County. Honestly, there currently isn’t even an existing bar at this point, so we intend to set it.

If you’re in Stark County and are interested in being a part of this change, please contact me via the link in my signature below or the link at the top of the page.  I will provide you with more information and you can decide what you would like to do.

Positive things are coming to Stark County and I want you to be a part of it.  🙂
