Tips for those long waits at the doctors

I was thinking that we could all benefit from learning some new tips and tricks to help make those long doctors office appointments, bearable.

It never fails that we end up waiting a really long time before being seen at the doctors office.

The wait is especially difficult for my kids.

One of the things we have learned to do early on was to redirect them. We have found things like I Spy to be very helpful in distracting them from the long wait.

What kinds of things do you find helpful in these situations?

It took one good meltdown for the staff and other patients to witness at my pediatrician’s office. Now, we go back every time with little wait. If it isn’t my pediatricians office, my husband and I try to tag team…. meaning, one takes the kids for a walk, or exploring the building. When we get called back, we talk via text to let the other know we can go bqck….and so far, that works for us.

We bring along Jacob’s kindle fire and some headphones. The kindle fire keeps his hands and mind busy and the headphones not only keep everyone in the office from having to listen to the games, but also keeps the noise of the office from Jacob’s sensitive ears. We also tote a mini backpack filled with snacks and drinks, pen and paper, and new dollar store toys that Jacob has never played with before. Sometimes the new toys keep Jacob busy for a long time, sometimes they dont work at all, but for $1 it is worth a try!

When I’m at appointments such as the doctor or dentist, etc. I bring my Droids along (I have 4 a DROIDX, RAZR HD and Acer A500 tablet. I also have a fake one that I cuddle with). They comfort me and the 3 live ones keep me occupied when I’m waiting. I never leave the house without them. My tablet is also an emergency charger for my RAZR

When we have appointments I always make sure William has plenty of snacks and drinks with us. I also bring his Lego because he can hold 6 bricks in each hand and he manipulates them into a tower and then takes it apart over and over again. Never dropping one!! X

My son jack loves his leapfrog tablet. He can look at books and watch videos and play games. Downloading apps is easy and it keeps him occupied while sitting in a waiting room. Also sometimes you can talk to the office staff about keeping a couple toys there that he always gets to play with when hes there. Gives him something to look forward too.
