    I need HELP!

My 2 year old son was diagnosed with pdd nos. I knew from the beginning that he seemed a bit behind and didn’t react to things like expected. He doesn’t talk yet and has alot of sensory issues. For the past month he has been working with a speak therapist and an occupational therapist. They have been great. My son is now learning to sign so we are finally able to communicate. However, over the past couple of weeks he screams and cries most of the day and we can’t figure out why. My husband and I both work (I work days and he works evenings) we can’t afford daycare so we managed to work it out so one of us is always home. The downside is whoever is home is dealing with this issue on their own. We are quickly becoming exhausted and have no family or friends nearby for help. Does anyone have suggestions as to what could cause this all of a sudden? Solutions?

That’s a really tough situation and one that I can relate to personally. Our youngest was was very similar and did speak for almost 3 years. He was actually believed to be deaf but eventually proven otherwise.

Out of nowhere he just began talking and surprised everyone.

Perhaps he’s frustrated at his inability to speak and communication struggles. That was extremely frustrating for my son.

What evaluations has he had done?

He has had of course the evaluation which determined PDDNOS, a hearing evaluation, and the Speech and occupational therapists did their own evaluations to determine what they need to work on with him. The hearing eval said he has perfect hearing. He has major texture issues and is terrified of stuffed animals because they are furry. Most of his toys are hard plastic. He won’t even look at a baby doll. He also had problems eating certain things. He had also become very clingy to me and wants me to sit with him in my lap and wants my hand so he can twist my rings. lately he doesn’t want his diaper changed and its a fight every time. We have tried potty training but it just isn’t working. Its like we are taking one step forward and the steps back.

I have had the same problem with my 3 yr, he has childhood autism and is non verbal. His screaming did not stop until he went to a special needs nursery and started to sign. It is very frustrating when they are screaming we still have the occasional day where he still does this and we just go through everything that we think it could be until he stops đŸ˜‰

My son is finally starting to communicate via sign language which has been getting much better but I have been told by his speech therapist that he believes he has apraxia as well. My son also has issues with his kidneys and they are getting worse. It seems like every time he has to go in for tests for his kidneys he seems to forget how to use the signs he has learned and has to learn them all over again. I feel like we take one step forward and three steps back!

You got to think that when he gets nervous and stressed he will forget everything, that’s without adding in your nervous and stress. Try to stay calm this is easier said than done. Don’t worry that he is not doing it there!

Maybe it’s the change in his normal routine, my 3 yr old is the same. If it gets changed he stops doing anything for a couple of days as if to say this is not what normally happens! When my son goes back to nursery in September his special needs teacher is going to work closely with him and us at this. At nursery it is very structured as is home so every day they are going to do something new at different times every day to try and brake the cycle

That may be it, paired with the testing they do sometimes which can be pretty traumatizing.
